This is the Mindset Artistry Podcast. I'm Amanda DeBraux, an actor or actress per your reference, and an inner voice life coach, and I'm Janel.
Janel Koloski:Koloski, an actor and career and mindset coach. We're your hosts and we're here to flip your mindset to teach you the artistry.
Amanda DeBraux:Welcome back to another episode of Mindset Artistry, where Janelle and I help you unlock your fullest potential through goals and insight and personal stories. But today is really special because today we're going to talk about the course that we are launching in August and the benefit that I am going to offer and what you're going to get out of it. So here we are. As you know, we all need help. Let's just be honest. We all need help. Some of us don't know how to ask. Some of us feel very vulnerable asking for help and I get it because I was one of those people who did not like asking for help, because I felt like it meant that I couldn't do it on my own, that I wasn't strong enough to do it, that I was kind of weak, and asking for help was not a thing. It was like get over it, deal with it, figure it out. But what I recognize is that I was doing myself a disservice. I was doing myself a disservice of not asking for help from people, particularly who have dealt with a situation that I am currently in but overcame it, or learned a lesson or has a skill that I don't. Because when I did ask for help. It made the journey even harder for me to process and get through and also prolonged the thing that I'm trying to accomplish or achieve.
Amanda DeBraux:And so the podcast and acting as actors, what do we do? We go to classes, we go to workshops, we ask questions. We get to the people who are in the industry already doing what we aspire to do. We watch interviews from the people that we admire, the actors, so that we can know and is that not the same thing as asking without asking? I think so. So this is where Janelle and I we hosted a workshop last year and it was phenomenal, and we figured this time let's bring it to you so you have access to the things that impacted the people who attended it last year, and if you check the link below, we'll have all the information and we got some free offers that lead up to that course, so stay tuned. So, before we dive into specifically what this course is going to be about, and particularly what I am going to be hosting and teaching you now, what is the most exciting thing about this course that you're sharing with everyone and something that you took away from even teaching others?
Janel Koloski:I'm excited to pack all I've learned in 15 years into four weeks, the best of the best, so that people can't make the same mistakes that I did. And it was really beautiful doing the workshop, watching everyone hear other people's struggles or other people's insecurities and realize that they weren't alone. Oh, it's not just me. And so that's why I'm excited to do this group course, because it's going to show you you're not alone and we're better together and we can help each other and there's room for everybody to rise. Everyone can shine. You know, there's room for all of us.
Amanda DeBraux:I love that. That is like nail on the head, baby. Yeah, this is a course that we really put our heart and soul into. We thought about it Again. We're coming from our hearts of things that we've learned throughout our years Now 15 years me, 10 years and working in corporate and figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, but being told I should be doing something else or being encouraged to do certain things when really it wasn't following my heart. And that brings me to what I will be offering for this course particularly is diving into identity.
Amanda DeBraux:And how do we do that is diving into such things as limiting beliefs, darling and blocks and mental blocks that we deal with on a daily basis, that we may not be paying attention to. That have been the driving force in the actions we take and the actions that we don't take and how we look at our goals, even our self, relationships with people, relationships with your career. So much of this career as actors and just creatively, is about rejection, but so much of that comes from the fact that we seek expression constantly. That's what creatives want. We want to express ourselves in our art. And how do you do that if you keep telling yourself you're wrong and telling yourself you're not good enough or you aren't worthy, or success is for other people and not you. You limit yourself, you put yourself in this box and you are stopping yourself from seeing opportunities that may be right in front of you, pursuing opportunities or even giving yourself the pat on the back, the A-OK, to go, just try it. You never know what can happen and what you can discover about yourself and your capabilities and also your potential. So I'll be diving into that particular realm of thoughts and that particularly is limiting beliefs. You're going to get to understand what limiting beliefs are, how they show up in your life and how can you self-evaluate, self-reflect and be self-aware of these limiting beliefs and where they show up in your life. And this is not a course that's going to be like judge you and do this Absolutely not.
Amanda DeBraux:Because, again, janelle and I have been there. I have self-sabotaged myself in my career of back in the day, where I judged myself so much and believed in the rejection that I stopped putting effort into my auditions and I was like, whatever, I'm not going to get it, who cares? It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, just that line, right. And yeah, fine, it doesn't matter, but there was something behind it. It was like I'm hurt, so I'm going to protect myself so that I don't get hurt again, so I'm not going to put so much effort.
Amanda DeBraux:And again I was doing myself a disservice in my art, as well as the casting director that I'm meeting, the producer that maybe I'm meeting. I'm doing them a disservice because I'm walking in with that energy Like I don't care, I don't need you. Why would they hire you? Why would they want you on set, when this is supposed to be a collaborative art. This is supposed to be an art of expression. This is supposed to be an art of bringing humanity to life and showing and being the mirror that we want to see about the stories of the people and the world, right, and so that's the energy that you're coming across and that's the energy that I was in and I was like I don't need it, whatever, and I self sabotage.
Amanda DeBraux:And because I did that, I stopped responding effectively in emails to casting directors, producers I would miss auditions, like, oh crap, I totally forgot, did I? So just those little things that we don't realize have been subconsciously working in our belief system, that has been driving our reality, our outside worlds and how we interact with, again, friends, family, our career and even our colleagues, especially in this career. This is considered a competitive career, when really reality it's not. It's a collaborative career, but we're pitted against each other all the time. Well, she's more talented than he is or she is, and all these things. When reality, your talent is nothing compared to someone else, because that's your unique talent. You're not meant to be somebody else. And so when you understand that and navigate these conversations and these thoughts, these intrusive thoughts, then you're able to become more clear and be able to create clarity within your goals and within your career.
Amanda DeBraux:And Janelle so this is why we're doing it together, y'all is that Janelle talks about the career path, and so how do you make goals in your career path if you're not clear on who you are and what you actually want and what your dreams are? And then, how do you make goals if you keep telling yourself you're not good enough to achieve that goal? What do you do? Fine, you made the goal. You're like I'm going to do it, regardless of the fear. But then some challenges come up along the way, some unexpected things, as life has happened to all of us right or rejection.
Amanda DeBraux:And the fact of the matter is this career if you're in it for the right reasons, you're in it for the long haul. So imagine being able to walk into an audition room feeling confident, feeling proud of the work that you're doing and truly believing that you're worth it and you're you're, you're the talent, and not saying, like you know what everybody, like you, don't need anybody else, fine, but being confident where it's like no, I know this character, I'm bringing something so unique to it because I have the story to tell. And I'm not thinking of the perfection aspect of that role because I want to please you. No, I want to show you what I got. I want to show you what I got and what I can bring to that role and then how I can collaborate with you when we are on set.
Amanda DeBraux:Again, this is a collaborative art and people want to know that, oh, you're going to bring your ideas and be bold in the audition room and then, when you're on set, they want to be able to rely on that and go okay, I have an idea, let's bounce it off of each other. Or expecting that, yeah, she's going to be on set, she's going to get the job, or she's going to do the job. She knows how to do it. She's going to be here or they're going to be here. These are the things that you have to think about as an artist and as an actor, even if you're not an actor, being a model. Janelle can speak to that. Janelle, tell me how this all speaks to you from a model perspective, and walking into a fitting or a go-see.
Janel Koloski:Yes, I'm grateful that I was always so focused on just being the best that I could be that I never really thought of the competition. It actually would overwhelm me. I only have so much capacity for things. So I didn't even have the room, despite having a lot of anxiety at times and thinking of a million worst case scenarios. Oddly enough, I would just go into the room and be like, okay, I'm going to do my best work and this is who I am, and I didn't even think about how many other people were going out for the job. And maybe two or three days later I would feel a little awkward about it, but it was already too late.
Janel Koloski:Like, I did what I did and I've noticed with myself and with other people that you really just have to do a little bit every day and say, oh, do I want to do this?
Janel Koloski:Oh, I do, okay, that means there's work for me and you have to keep showing up and the more opportunities that you get, the less the limiting beliefs coming in. So Amanda's great helping people with this. It's really getting over that hump when you don't have as many opportunities to when you have a lot more, just knowing that you'll get there and it does get a lot easier, because if you're getting five auditions a week, you're like okay, if you're getting one every three months, it gets a little harder to knock out those limiting beliefs. But if you can get rid of your limiting beliefs when you're in a low, we'll call it. Nothing can touch you, you know. But it's really gotta be about competing against yourself in a healthy way. It's really a waste of time to look at other people, unless you're gonna to take it as inspiration, like okay, they can do it, I can do it too, in my own way.
Amanda DeBraux:Exactly, I love that. Yeah, it's these. Everyone in this art and everything, everyone that is in any career that you're in, should be a collaborative partner. You should see them as, oh, they're doing something really creative. That is like tied to them. I love that. What can I do?
Amanda DeBraux:Yesterday I just went to a conference or a summit where Charlize Theron was there and Uzo from Orange is the New Black and they talked about their charity work and it was just insightful of like wow, she was on stage and they were on stage talking about why they've gotten involved in these charities. And it was on stage and they were on stage talking about why they've gotten involved in these charities and it inspired me. It inspired me to go. What can I do? What do I have a passion for that I can help bring awareness to, and just switching that energy, that energy shift, that mindset shift, into more digestible dialogue, to more encouraging dialogue, to more encouraging energy, changes your whole perspective on life. It changes your whole perspective.
Amanda DeBraux:When you are in this lull of a moment where you're not getting auditions weekly or monthly, maybe quarterly you start to recognize how can I fill up my cup regardless of what's happening, and when you let go of these limiting beliefs or you're aware of them. You're able to do that. You give yourself permission to live, and a lot of people have difficulty living, and I get it. We're like robots, honestly. We're like walking zombies, because we're in this route of behavior where we're just like I got the job, moving on nine to five or whatever it is. I'm doing this, I'm doing that, and it's like where's the fun, where's the joy, where's the laughter, where's a little bit of celebratory behavior of congratulating yourself to say I'm doing it? You know how often Janelle and I have checked in with each other when it comes to podcasts and acting. We're like, yeah, I'm doing it, that's what I think. We're doing it, we're getting it done. We're doing it because just saying that shifts your mindset again from being, oh, this is overwhelming, I can't do this, it's taking too long to like I'm still doing it. I have, I'm doing something a day, digestible action every single day. And how do you do that? Again, tapping into your identity, tapping into your mindset, tapping into your inner voice, and so, again, all this ties to, and it becomes full circle to, the career path.
Amanda DeBraux:This is a critical point of knowing how to navigate your career and then being able to stand there and say I am who I am and this is what I bring to the table, as an actor or a model or a painter, whatever it is that you want to do. You're standing there, confident in who you are, and they may not like it, but somebody else will, and that's okay. And then learning how to navigate when you aren't okay, and that is okay. To not feel okay Totally normal. It is totally normal Janelle mentioned it earlier where it's like you don't recognize how many people are going through what you're going through right now, and it feels like we don't, and it feels like we're alone.
Amanda DeBraux:It's like because we get so consumed by the intrusive, negative, low vibrational thoughts that are diminishing us, belittling us, that we're forgetting like, oh, there's got to be someone out there who has thought through this, who has overcome this, or maybe they're going through it right now. What are they doing? How can I get out of it? And so it's that conscious pause of going okay, I'm not alone, I'm not alone in this.
Amanda DeBraux:And even by saying that you're attracting energy from other people to go hey, let me share the story with you, I may have an idea for you.
Amanda DeBraux:Oh, I know someone who can help you with that.
Amanda DeBraux:Oh, I have an acting coach, or I have a friend who's actually doing a short film and is looking for actors, or is looking for a PA, or is looking for whatever it may be. So again, opportunities, right Opportunities that we get to, that we ignore while we're stuck in our minds and in these trusive thoughts and these negative thoughts. So imagine having this course in your back pocket, honey, and being able to go back to it or just to learn from it. To go, I got this. I'm going through a harsh time, but let me go back to the tools that Janelle and Amanda taught me about. Maybe intrusive thoughts, or the career. Janelle is going to go and dive deep into the aspects of career, the aspects of career. And so what do you hope that anyone who joins the course gets from your portion of a course of understanding, like the career roadmap, and how they can use this to their advantage, and it's not just one career, but how they can transition that into multiple careers and multiple hobbies that can potentially be careers.
Janel Koloski:I want everyone to feel empowered with a blueprint. I give a break it down for you Eight pillars of what I've found has built me a very lucrative, multi-hyphenate career, and you will make it your own, but each pillar will give you the building blocks to make this, this blueprint. And that was everything to me, because on the days when it's really hard and it doesn't seem like anything is working, I would just say to myself well, what can I do? What is in my control? Because I want to do this, I'm not going to focus on everybody else and what's out of my control, what can I do? And so they'll leave with a blueprint. And also I'll teach you that, uh, how to prioritize.
Janel Koloski:People get overwhelmed. There's so much to do. What do I do? And you have to. Honestly, amanda's going to help you tap in, but prioritize. What scares you the most is usually what you need to do. That will move the needle and Amanda will help you work through that. So I'm excited for people to leave with more confidence and empowerment around. Uh, this is a career and I'm the boss of my career and I'm making it happen because I want it and so, and so it will be. Not I want to do this. I need to do this. I am doing this changed everything.
Amanda DeBraux:Yeah, I love that I am doing this. You know that I am concept and what you're also going to get from this course is additional tools like meditations, and I provide some journal prompts. If you may not know how to dive into these limiting beliefs, I provide journal prompts that are going to help you just with questions and explore that and give you a safe environment to explore that without judgment. This is a judgment-free course, this is a judgment free zone. And the benefits here are three amazing benefits that you're going to get, not only from my portion of the course but from Janelle's.
Amanda DeBraux:When you're understanding the core aspect of business mindset and the core aspect of mental and mindset is understanding and enhancing your confidence and empowerment and Janelle spoke to that right, you're going to recognize these, um, these preliminary beliefs, these intrusive thoughts, right. And then you're going to have a strong sense of worth. You're going to develop that sense of worth and and couple that with confidence, empowerment, you're going to elevate your performances and auditions, even when you feel nervous or when you're on set going oh, I don't know if I belong here, because I'm on set with my, the one I admire.
Amanda DeBraux:And we all have that Like I've been on set when I did Law and Order and I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm here with Agsti, like you know, and it's like so exciting, but I let myself be grounded and still have fun with it and that's being in tuned right, that's being able to feel so confident. Enhance that connection with confidence and empowerment and then you're going to be able to be effective in your life, right, effective goal setting and achieving. And you're going to recognize that achievement doesn't always have to be big and grand right, it can be the small things that lead up to the things that you are the to be big and grand. Right, it can be the small things that lead up to the things that you are the big thing that you consider right. And then recognizing that sometimes that big thing that you think you actually want is not really your dream. It may not actually be the thing that you're meant to do. You may be able to do something else that's over here, but it might be bigger than what you expect, so it's letting go. Maybe you're able to do something else that's over here, but it might be bigger than what you expect, so it's letting go right. It's like recognizing and going with the flow of life, but knowing what you're meant to do, knowing and having that passion and that through line within life to go. This is what I'm meant to do. Am I meant to tell stories? I'm meant to help people. What is that purpose? And you'll be able to understand that once you get in tuned with your inner voice. This is what it's all about. You can't get to your inner voice if you keep listening to other people, if you keep filling your subconscious other people's opinions and just comparison. You're not going to understand who you are.
Amanda DeBraux:And then how do you bring that authenticity into your craft, your craft? I was just again. I also attended a casting director workshop where the biggest thing that these casting directors said was do your best, but be authentic. Be authentic. Don't do the performance that you think they want. Don't do that. Do the performance as authentically you, because that makes you interesting. That's what we watch for movies and shows. You want that interesting character. You can't be interesting if you're mimicking Janelle or myself or Denzel. You're mimicking them. You're never going to be them because you can't do that. But yeah, fine, you want to do. Stand up and do voices. That's totally different. But again, you're doing it in your authentic way still.
Amanda DeBraux:And lastly, what you're going to get from this course is a way to heal. You're going to understand how to heal through this process. You're going to understand that, although you may have these intrusive thoughts, although you may have these goals and aspirations, you're going to help heal maybe generational trauma or just rejection, and navigating those things, understanding and healing your relationship with me, myself and I. You're going to start that journey and this is just the beginning course. We're going to eventually add more to it, but for right now, this is the stepping stone. We want you to be able to digest what we're offering and so that you can take it with you and learn from it and practice it every day, so that eventually it becomes as easy as walking or brushing your teeth or breathing without you subconsciously thinking it right Sometimes. Remember, our body is subconsciously working without us even knowing it and paying attention to it. That's what you want to do. You have to develop this mindset. You have to develop this mindset. You have to develop these thoughts, you have to develop this practice and in order to do that, is you just got to spend time with it every day, in small nuggets. It doesn't have to be overwhelming and, again, you're going to not only get the healing, but this is personal development. You're supposed to get better.
Amanda DeBraux:No actor or model was yeah, they were great maybe in the beginning, but they got better. They're not what they are today. If they kept being the same that they were in the beginning. It's just impossible. You have to learn, you have to grow, you have to be open to these things, and the only way to do that is to ask these questions, to get vulnerable with yourself, to get personal, to get to be open, what you want, getting clear on your core values, getting clear on your voice and really understanding the importance of how inner work is tied to the business work. And so I just want to jump back to now. Any last words on the course and how you've chosen these specific topics to help those in this industry and the entertainment industry and fashion industry.
Janel Koloski:I took a long time to choose these topics because I really part of it came from. You'll hear about me talking about the three buckets business, craft and self-care and that's something I did years ago, but then I had to keep adding more to it. Of course, professionalism was always a part of it, but just the work that Amanda does a lot of and I'll touch on a little bit is really the inner work. That's everything, because so many people are really great at their craft, because it's what they love, right. But the business often scares people and they don't want to be mean or overstep or they're afraid to upset someone. They don't want to be mean or overstep or they're afraid to upset someone, and so I'm excited to help people learn that you have to wear different hats. When you are doing your craft, when you're acting, you can't be thinking of a business like what do they want? Now, when you have your business hat on, you do have to think what type do they need me to be? If I'm walking down the street and that's what I'm seen as, even though I can play anything, that's good for the business, but no, you play with your craft and then with the self-care. You can't have any business in there or craft. It's got to be your soul man. So I'm really excited for everybody and it's those three components that I really always had to include.
Janel Koloski:And the last thing I'll say is don't worry, it does get easier. It can be tricky, but it's really nice, because I used to be really like oh, I didn't meet my goal yet, so I'm never, I'm terrible. And then now, you know, every day I just kind of lay in bed and I'm just thinking what did I do a little better today? Oh, that person was really rude on the subway and I wasn't reactive. Ah, I'm healing. I took longer with the audition than I expected. Now I can embrace it as a learning and growth process, but in the past, when I didn't think I was enough or worthy or it was wrong for me to be seen, I would just freeze up and block myself. So I won't say too much more. But this is all the stuff that we're going to be talking about. I think everybody needs to have in order to check off the boxes, because it's kind of what people want sometimes.
Amanda DeBraux:Yeah, and I love everything you said about that because it's just the reality of it. This is life can sometimes feel so hard because we're playing so many roles in our lives, we've got so many things that we want to do, but we just don't know what direction to go, how to approach this. And yes, I do business as well, but my priority is inner voice. Because I struggled with that priorities inner voice. Because I struggled with that. I did the business so much that I forgot to connect with my inner self and that's why it means so much to me, because once I did, I'm walking into rooms at to be seen as I am. That is my nature. But you can't do that if you're so stuck in your head, questioning every little thing or talking down to yourself or going. I got to make it this way, I got to be perfect. That makes you unique too. It's like just embracing the moment and being with yourself and letting it flow and having fun At the end of the day. If you're not having fun in your craft, you got to do something different, something's got to change, something's got to shift in the day. Take a little alone, blah, blah, blah for something, but something has to change if you aren't having fun. We're meant to be joyful people. Maybe not all the time because there's so much going on, but joy should be a priority in your life and when you're also diving into such things as limiting beliefs and understanding how your career plays a part in your life, you're able to now pay attention and set intentional living going. How do I involve the joy in my life? How do I create long lasting relationships with my friends or family or partner or family or children or my pets hey, I'm a pet lover. Now I got rabbits. I got my dog. How do you learn how to navigate that if you're not actively pausing and asking yourself these questions, exploring who you are? You got to explore who you are. You're more than just an actor and you're not defined by a career. What is it that you want to be remembered for? Not just your career, but how you're impacting the world. These are things that matter and you have to again dive into those things and be vulnerable Again.
Amanda DeBraux:I went this casting. One of the castings was Sunny. She was like I love when actors get vulnerable and cry. She was. That's so exciting to me. She's like let's do it again. You know it's exciting because that's what we want. Vulnerability, or just expressing ourselves, creates a world that feels relatable. And how do you relate to and colleague or your audience members if you can't even tap into who you are and explore what that's like? How do you bring your whole self to a character if you're judging the character, if this you know, how are you bringing that to life? If you're going, no, this character's a piece of shit, but okay, fine, yeah, but maybe they don't know they're a piece of shit. They're not going through that life, going I'm a piece of shit. They're going through life in a way that it serves them. So it's understanding how, now, not only limiting beliefs is going to serve you as a person and your personal development and your career, but in your craft and so that's huh, can I say something?
Janel Koloski:Yeah, yeah, and that made me think of something a through line, of anything I've ever booked or an audition I felt good about, even if I didn't book, and it was always like I was able to tap into how the person felt, because you can get so caught up in like this is the way it has to be done and it has to be technically sound. Of course, you can't be like, well, you know, like all over the place, but you know, I remember there was an audition where they're like oh that's, you know, I was buying drugs from people in the wrong, on the other side of the tracks or something, and I actually ended up sobbing because they weren't going to give it to me and it was to help my mom with her back pain. And people were like, why would you make that choice? Like she wouldn't let them see her cry. But I was like no, I saw a human there. Yeah, I wasn't trying to cry.
Janel Koloski:What I was focused on was what does this mean to me, this relationship, what am I getting? What is the core emotion? You know I have to play villains a lot because I've got a pointy nose and sharp jaw and a tall, deep voice, dark hair, right, and you know it's like sometimes it's like why it's so fascinating. So we just want to free you. You know, like find your inner voice, because I had a great teacher that said you, you know like find your inner voice Cause I had a great teacher that said, um, you can't really put another character on if you and be somebody else if you don't know who you are. That's right. Yeah, so you're all welcome. Yeah, we're changing your life.
Amanda DeBraux:Yes, yes, definitely. And the course is up now and and before the course, we are offering two amazing things so you can get a sense of what we're going to offer. We have two amazing things that we're offering, and so the link is below where we're going to offer. I am sharing with you an energy clearing manifestation guide where I personally use every day and it has changed my life, has changed my perspective, and just it's that small shift and that small step that you do daily that makes long-term effects, that affects your life in ways that you don't even know until you're like oh look at me, like Nell said, I'm not getting angry.
Amanda DeBraux:Or like I embraced the audition even though I messed up a line, or I got on set and I knew where to go and I was confident. I asked questions, or you know all these things is knowing who you are. So this amazing guide is really. It will help you start that step and start that process. And then Nell is offering amazing things. So imagine being able to clear your energy and clear your mindset and get really clear. And then going hey, guess what? I've got some email templates for you to connect to the business people and let them know I'm here. Hey, I'm here and I want to work, I'm ready to work and I've got the skills and using that to your advantage in a genuine, passionate way. And so you're going to get those. The link is below, of course, the courses there as well, and it doesn't start until August 1st and we're so, so excited.
Amanda DeBraux:And in this course, let me just say this we're going to offer two separate occasions where we're going to do some group coaching. So you'll get to go on Zoom with us and video chat and you'll get to. Hey, I'm struggling with this portion of it. Can you get some more clarity, or you're going to get that. You're going to get access to us, you're going to get coaching on the spot, and then you'll get some additional coaching as well, and so this is an opportunity of a lifetime that you may not get again at this price either.
Amanda DeBraux:So I just want to share that with you and say that this is something that you may not know that you need, but you do. May not know that you need, but you do, and that we are always in your corner, and this is a community that will nurture your growth personally, professionally, physically, mentally and emotionally. And I can't wait to see you there. And we'll see you next time, because next time I am going to have one of my clients who I've coached talk about her coaching experience with me and what she got out of it, what the benefits and what she wants to share about her journey and this time that we've coached together. So I can't wait to stay tuned and we'll see you next time. And that's a wrap on this episode of Mindset Artistry Podcast. Don't forget to like, share and subscribe.
